World Tourism Day 2026: Celebrating the People Behind Maldives Tourism
Every year on 27 September, World Tourism Day provides an opportunity to celebrate tourism and the people whose dedication keeps the industry moving. For the Maldives, that celebration carries special meaning.
Behind the picture-perfect islands, turquoise lagoons and world-renowned hospitality are thousands of tourism professionals working every day across the country’s resorts. From housekeeping and engineering to food and beverage, security, recreation, transport, finance and management, their collective effort forms the foundation of the Maldivian tourism experience.
Their days can be demanding. Resort operations continue around the clock, and delivering the standards expected of one of the world’s leading tourism destinations requires commitment, professionalism and teamwork.
Yet beyond those responsibilities, there is another side to resort life.
Where Tourism Meets Sport
For the past 14 years, Resort League has provided tourism industry staff with a platform to step away from their everyday roles and represent the resorts they work for through futsal.
A player competing under the lights may have spent the day working as an engineer, chef, waiter, security officer, boat crew member, accountant or in another role within the resort. Team managers, supporters and many of those involved are resort colleagues who make time around their busy work schedules to be part of the league, while some teams also bring in professional coaches to lead their squads.
For a few hours, job titles and departments take a back seat. Colleagues become teammates, resorts become teams, and people who usually meet through their professional responsibilities come together through sport.
The commitment required is significant. Training sessions have to fit around shifts and operational responsibilities, while match days can involve travel between resorts before players return to their regular duties.
That is part of what makes Resort League special. It reflects the energy, friendship and team spirit that exist within the tourism workforce beyond the guest experience.
Tourism Entering a New Era
World Tourism Day 2026 also looks towards the future, with Artificial Intelligence at the centre of discussions around the next transformation of tourism.
Innovation and digitalisation are increasingly important to the development of tourism, alongside skills development, sustainability and more effective destination management. UN Tourism's wider work also identifies innovation, digitalisation, education and skills among important areas for the industry's sustainable development.
AI has the potential to support better decision-making, strengthen skills and change how destinations and tourism operations are managed. But as technology advances, the people behind tourism remain fundamental.
For the Maldives, that human element can be seen every day in the people who welcome visitors, maintain resorts, prepare meals, operate vessels, manage facilities and deliver countless services across the resorts.
It can also be seen after working hours, when those same colleagues put on their resort colours and walk onto a futsal pitch.
Celebrating the People Behind the Industry
On World Tourism Day 2026, Resort League celebrates the hardworking men and women across the Maldivian tourism industry, not only for the work they do, but also for the passion, friendships and communities they continue to build beyond their professional responsibilities.
Technology will continue to transform tourism. Resorts will evolve, new ideas will emerge and AI will increasingly become part of how the industry operates.
But behind every innovation and every memorable Maldives experience will remain something irreplaceable: people.
